Biography

The 1905 history and genealogy of the Linn family, which was based in part on information obtained from one sibling and other contemporaries of John Linn, relates that John was married to Jane Scyoc (1780-1854).^[1] Jane's maiden name in fact was Van Scyoc, and she is reported elsewhere to be the 6th generation descended from a family born in The Netherlands. Her immigrant ancestor is believed to be Cornelis Aertsen Van Schaick (1610-1669). Her father was John van Scyoc, he leaving a will dated 19 February 1830 in which he named, among others, his daughter Jane Linn.^[2] Jane was bequeathed the sum of $2.00, presumably because she had been given her share of her father's fortune when she and John Linn were married.

The Linn history and genealogy relates that Jane died in 1854, nine years after her husband; but the place and exact date of death are unknown, and the location of her grave is uncertain. She has not been found in the 1850 census while all her children save one - Margaret (Linn) Hockenberry - are found in that census, and Jane is not included in any of their households.
